Game of Thrones Crowned Champion in Greatest TV Show of All Time Tournament

Breaking Bad, Band of Brothers, Chernobyl, Game of Thrones

It is official. Game of Thrones won the tournament and is crowned as the greatest TV show of all time, as far as I am concerned. After the first day of votes coming in, Band of Brothers was actually winning. After the next several days, however, GOT took a commanding lead and didn’t let it go taking 71% of the votes.

Game of Throne’s Path to Victory

Let’s take a look back and see how GOT dominated the tournament. First, it beat New Girl with 88.8% of the vote. For a first round that was closer than I would have thought leading me to wonder how New Girl could have done in a different spot in the draw. Next, GOT slaughtered Vikings with 97.7% of the vote. This was surprising as Vikings got a lot of hype for a while, some people saying it was better than GOT.

GOT beat down Stranger Things with 83.3% of the vote, making me very happy. Stranger Things is overrated and Netflix is milking it for all it’s worth at this point. Next, Game of Thrones beat The Office with a respectable 66.7% of the vote. This was not surprising at all. The Office is an elite comedy, but it just can’t compete with the likes of GOT.

The main event everyone was waiting for was Game of Thrones vs. Breaking Bad in the final four. GOT took 64.7% of the votes in a surprisingly decisive fashion. I expected Breaking Bad to put up more of a fight, but am happy that it didn’t. Finally, GOT predictably beat Band of Brothers fairly easily in the finals. Yes, Game of Thrones finished very poorly, but up until then it was pretty much flawless. In my opinion no other show even holds a candle to GOT’s first six seasons, and it showed in the voting results.

A Look Back at Some Big Moments in the Tournament

This tournament was very fun to put together and see the results. It surprised me in a good way in some instances, but also greatly disappointed me in others. Let’s look back and see some of these moments in the tournament.

Heartbreaks

The first one I can see was South Park upsetting Sherlock in the second round. Sherlock is a masterpiece and I was excited for it to get a crack at Breaking Bad. Unfortunately people apparently love South Park. The next show that upset me greatly was Curb Your Enthusiasm. It must just be me, but I don’t find that kind of humor funny. It first beat Community, which is the best comedy that exists in my opinion, and then beat Rick and Morty, which I recently got into and is also an elite comedy.

The final and biggest heartbreak is Avatar: The Last Airbender losing to The Shield. The Shield?! Really? Who even watches this? I mentioned earlier how GOT was nearly flawless through 6 seasons. Well, Avatar is straight up flawless throughout its short 3 seasons. Okay, maybe that is a little much, there were some meh episodes. But as a whole, Avatar is truly elite. Netflix recently added it again to its library and it has been very popular ever since. I would bet if we redid this whole tournament today with the same bracket, that Avatar would go to the finals and lose to Game of Thrones.

Pleasant Surprises

There were not as many of these, but still some worth mentioning. My two biggest pleasant surprises are how badly GOT beat Stranger Things, and how Breaking Bad wasn’t even close to beating GOT. Another nice one was 24 beating Peaky Blinders in round one. I have heard good things about Peaky Blinders, but was happy that Jack Bauer advanced still. My favorite surprise was Death Note beating The Big Bang Theory. I thought Death Note would not stand a chance since it is anime, the people restored my father when it they voted for it to beat the very mediocre Big Band Theory.

Lost had me worried coming into the tournament as a 12 seed, but it did very well, getting some upsets along the way. It seems Lost gets a lot of hate from people who either haven’t ever seen it but love to say how bad it is, and from dumb people who watch a few episodes or seasons and can’t handle its complexity. Lost had a legitimate chance to make it far, but I am proud of how it did.

As a whole this tournament was a ton of fun. Thank you very much to everyone who participated and kept up with it. I will certainly do more brackets like this in the future, let me know what you would like the next one to be!
