Weekly Movie News Round-Up

Sandlot prequel in the works

Why is this happening? It just seems so unnecessary. The original Sandlot is a cult classic and we already have two awful sequels. Plus, the first movie starred young kids. How are they going to do a prequel to that? According to the Deadline article, early reports are that the “beast” (James Earl Jones’ character’s dog) from the first movie. So maybe we get some back story in Jones’ character? That could be somewhat interesting, but right now I am as out on this as you can possible be.

Disney not expected to rehire James Gunn

Despite the waves of support James Gunn has received – most notably from the Guardians of the Galaxy cast – a report from Variety indicates Gunn will no be rehired. The article doesn’t give much new information, except that Disney is seemingly in no rush to find a new director. And as they have not announced an official release date for Guardians 3, they don’t yet have any real time constraints to get that done.

Tara Reid claims American Pie 5 could film in 2019

Ah, the news everyone was waiting for. In a recent interview with CinePOP, Reid was quoted as saying,

“I met the directors [Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg] recently at the Emmy party and I said, ‘Let’s do the fifth movie, the franchise needs another movie.’ They replied: ‘It will happen! We’re going to make another! ‘ It will be incredible to come back. American Pie is American Pie. Movies were a part of American culture, it’s a classic. It is known all over the world. I’m very excited. It’s going to be a great year for me, with Sharknado’s debut and the possibility of filming yet another American Pie in 2018.”

Of course nothing is set it stone at this point. This is nothing more than conjecture drawn from a brief conversation between one actress and the co-directors. I would be lukewarm about a fifth American Pie movie. The first two are solid; American Wedding was passable; Reunion had its moments, but ultimately was not great.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to adapt story of McDonald’s Monopoly fraud

The real news everyone was waiting for. If you haven’t had a chance yet to read the Daily Beast article about this, do yourself a favor and go read it. It’s wild. As soon as the article came out, movie fans everywhere were clamoring for a film adaptation of the story. And with these two heading the project, my initial hopes are very high.

Trailers
New Venom trailer

There might not be a movie that I want to be good more than Venom. I’m just not sure it’s going to be that good. I don’t think it’s going to be awful, but it feels like there will be something left to be desired. I’m hoping there is still work to be done about Venom’s voice. It sounds like something that could prove tough to understand during the film. And is it just me, or are we already over the whole “We are Venom” thing? It already seems a bit overplayed. Hopefully it won’t happen more than a couple times in the final cut.

Smallfoot final trailer

I could do without LeBron James, but otherwise, yeah I’m all in on this one. Looks like a real fun time.

If Beale Street Could Talk

I wasn’t familiar with this one until I saw the trailer. And even after watching it, I have no idea what the central plot is. And I’m going to try to keep it that way. It’s not often I get to go into a movie more or less completely in the dark. It looks to be an intense, character-driven drama and I’m here for it.

King of Thieves

Hell. Yes. It’s got a killer cast. Combine that with the fact that it’s a heist movie, and I am amped. Can’t wait for this one.

Jungle Cruise teaser

If not for Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt’s involvement, I would have less than no interest in this movie. But Blunt is a world-class actress and Johnson is always just a joy to watch, so maybe this will end up being a serviceable movie. The plot, from Wikipedia:

“Frank, a boat captain, takes his sister and her brother on a mission into a jungle to find a tree believed to possess healing powers. All the while, the trio must fight against dangerous wild animals and a competing German expedition.”

It actually sounds like an interesting enough premise. But it’s the fact that it’s based off an amusement park ride that gives me pause. We’ll have to wait and see what the first official trailer looks like.
