‘Survivor South Africa: Immunity Island’ Episode 14 Recap

Survivor South Africa: Immunity Island

Anela has damage control to do back at camp. To his credit, he’s saying the right things, but the damage is probably done. Kiran tells us in a confessional that their League of Shadows alliance is all but over, if not completely destroyed. But whether or not Anela’s actions make him a more desired target that Chappies still remains to be seen. Though I would guess the focus still stays on Chappies.

Kiran and Tyson agree that they can’t let Anela make it to the end, not because he’s a threat, but because they don’t want to see him get there after his abandoned attempt to blindside Kiran. But Kiran also realizes that given the small numbers left, he may not have a choice but to work with Anela for another vote or two.

Reward Challenge

Arrange a set of six buckets – each with a hole in it – on a totem pole. They then fill the top bucket with water, so that the water flows from bucket to bucket. The buckets need to be arranged in such a way to allow the water from the bottom bucket to flow into a bamboo chute and into a final bucket. When this last bucket falls over, it releases a key which they take to unlock their flag. They’re playing for a feast of steak and mash.

Chappies wins, shocker, I know. The man is on an absolute heater right now. He likely needs to win out, and it looks like he just might do it. Allowed to pick only one person to accompany him, Chappies chooses Anela.

Reward/Camp

Chappies and Anela discuss targeting Kiran (again). Anela says he’s 100% on board. He still feels like Kiran was the correct choice last vote, and he remains the correct choice. What?! My dude, come on. If Kiran was the right move, make it then! Anela gives Chappies his word that if Chappies doesn’t win the next immunity challenge, Anela will vote with Chappies to take out Kiran. They don’t talk about what they would do if Kiran wins immunity, but Tyson would be the presumptive choice in that situation. But of course you have to take everything someone says at a reward with several large grains of salt. Anela even has a confessional saying he still has to follow what’s best for himself and his game moving forward.

Returning to camp, Chappies and Anela tell the others they had to share one plate of food, hoping to still get a cup of rice. The tribe is running low on rice, and Kiran is monitoring their rations very closely. But Chappies just can’t help himself, and he starts cooking more rice during the night while everyone else is sleeping. Unfortunately for him, Kiran and Anela wake up and catch on to Chappies rather easily. But Chappies isn’t eating rice. He’s eating crab and mussels that he caught himself.

Immunity Challenge

The players start on a platform in the water. They swim to a stack of crates, climb up, over, and jump off to grab a key. They swim to a platform and cross a balance beam, collecting another key along the way. The keys unlock a colored ball slide puzzle.

Chappies gets to the puzzle first. And while Kiran, Tyson, and Anela are close behind, the lead proves to be enough, securing yet another immunity win.

Pre-Tribal

With Chappies immune, the target shifts to Kiran and Tyson. Anela and Nicole agree to vote Kiran out, seeing him as the stronger overall player compared to Tyson.

Tribal Council

Kiran is voted out. It’s all pretty straightforward. We didn’t see much scrambling from him, either prior to or during Tribal Council. Now, Kiran has shown all season that he’s a smart, strong, capable player. He’s not one to simply give up. I’m sure he made some inquiries, see if there was anything that could be done. But, again, he’s very smart. He may have realized it was a done deal.

On the one hand, it’s a bit disappointing to see a big player like Kiran go out like this, without much fire or fanfare. But on the other hand, it shows how strong of a feeling Kiran had on the pulse of the game. And now with Kiran out, plus Tyson’s injury, Chappies has a great chance to win his way into Final Tribal. And who knows, even if he loses along the way, without the Kiran/Tyson power couple, could there be some newfound wiggle room ?

All in all, a very fine episode, albeit with much less energy than the previous two episodes. Nothing wrong with that, not at all. Just a little change of pace. But I’m sure there will be plenty more fireworks before the season ends.
