Song Analysis Saturday: “Shattered” by Trading Yesterday

Song: Shattered

Artist: Trading Yesterday

Genre: Alternative

Alright, so far I have done three songs by three very well known artists that everyone knows. Now it’s time to get really obscure, and it’s time to get serious. So, I lied earlier about getting heavier with each next song, as this one is super chill and quiet for the first part, and then gets bigger, but not really heavy. I should have said we are getting better with each next song.

First Half: 9/10

So this song is extremely different from all others. It does not really have a proper song structure, as in intro, verse 1, chorus 1, verse 2, chorus 2, bridge, chorus 3. It is more divided into the first part and then the second. The first part is extremely relaxing, some might call it slow. That does not mean it is bad. Just close your eyes and listen to the soothing acoustic guitar, piano, and lyrics, which all work very well together to make the first half enjoyable.

Second Half: 10/10

There is a nice very quiet part in the middle of the song with some beautiful piano. When the singing starts up again with some guitar chords, you can tell things are getting serious. From this point on with each next two lines something is added, whether it be another instrument or background vocal. The song is building very quickly and you can sense something big is coming. Then it hits as the singer repeats everything he just sang. This last part of the song is so powerful, and does a phenomenal job making you really feel something.

Music: 10/10

David Hodges is the leader of this band, and he is a musical magician. You have probably never heard of him, but you have definitely heard some of his works. He has helped write songs for artists such as Evanescence, Backstreet Boys, and Carrie Underwood. Most of his musical career is spent working for other musicians, but this band is his own and he does what he wants with it.

The music in this song is truly beautiful, and I don’t toss that word around often. He uses guitar, piano, strings, and background vocals to add depth and layers to what starts out as a simple quiet song. I would go so far as to say the music in this song is completely perfect, where I would not change anything about what he does here.

Lyrics: 10/10

For me lyrics can only help a song. If a song has poor or cheesy lyrics I typically don’t care as long as the rest of the song is well done. But I can appreciate good deep lyrics. There might be some religious themes in this song, but mostly I think it is just about life. If you give this song a listen or two, I highly recommend doing so at night after a long day, just sit down and take in all of the lyrics as you listen.

Overall: 10/10

I don’t care what kind of music you listen to, this song is for everyone. If you give it a real chance,  worst case scenario is that you won’t mind it and it might be just a little slow for you. But most people I have showed this too have been quick to become addicted to it. As I said before, I would change nothing about this song. Usually, even amongst my all time favorite songs, I can find something small that I think would have made it better, but not here. That being said this is my second favorite song of all time. We will get to number one eventually, you all are just not ready for it yet!
