Song Analysis Saturday: “Ex-Boyfriend” by Lil Dicky

Song: Ex-Boyfriend

Artist: Lil Dicky

Genre: Hip Hop/Rap

I wasn’t sure where to go this week with a song, so I decided to review another comical/ridiculous song. Lil Dicky is a rapper, but he doesn’t rap about how awesome he is, or how much money he has. He writes a lot of absurd songs, and often tells stories in song form, as is the case with this gem.

Verses: 9/10

The verses is where most of the story is told here, and it is quite the story. Basically, it is about how he is about to get laid with his newer girlfriend, Katie. He genuinely likes her, and is very excited about it, but things take a turn as they run into her ex boyfriend. I won’t spoil the story, but Dicky gets a little jealous of this man and it throws a bit of a wrench in his plans.

Chorus: 7:10

The chorus is fine, nothing super awesome. But it just continues the story along. Only complaint is the melody of singing in the chorus is a little repetitive, but that is not the appeal of the song, so it is ok.

Music: 8/10

Typically rap songs have horrendous music, that is just a simple beat with some synthy stuff in the background. The beat in this song really is good though. It flows well, and does a good job for this type of song that is trying to tell a story.

Lyrics: 10/10

The lyrics are what makes or breaks a rap song for me, and this song really delivers. The story in itself is very good and comical. But to tell it in a song with lots of rhyming required is not easy to do. Lil Dicky is very creative with the details in his scenes he paints.

Overall: 8.5/10

As are most comedy songs I like, they are great for what they are. Is the song a phenomenal musical masterpiece? No. But it is hilarious and a good ride. Overall, it is definitely worth a few listens, and definitely check out the music video below as well.
